Mother’s Day 2017

While we should show our appreciation every day, Mother’s Day offers the perfect time to let moms know how much we value their love and hard work. Across rural America, we’re blessed with mothers who successfully balance farming, ranching and support businesses while raising families. Here are some of their stories:

  • Hilda Castillo works alongside her four sons to manage the family’s 124-acre produce farm in Florida. “We want to teach future generations that with hard work they can be successful in agriculture or in any job they choose,” Hilda says.
  • Farmer and photographer Christine Crumbaugh has welcomed a son back to the family farm, with another returning soon. The family is looking to expand its diversified Michigan operation to support the next generation.
  • For hog farmer Clare Schilling, managing the daily operation of her family’s operation, learning Spanish to help her communicate with her employees and raising two young children demands time management skills and a a strong work-life balance.
  • Gail Walter and her family moved from New Jersey to Arkansas to find a better quality of life for her special-needs son, Ray. When Ray went off to college, Gail started managing the family farm herself, with two other children at home, while her husband helped Ray at college.
  • Kati Hagenbuch works with her husband to raise their family while balancing a hog operation and embracing the challenge of educating consumers about the care they put into raising hogs and producing a safe, healthy food product. As Kati says, “I’m a mom, and I am concerned about what my kids eat. We wouldn’t want to produce food that we couldn’t feed to our own children.”

We wish mothers everywhere a happy Mother’s Day, and thank you for helping us feed our families.
